An intense earthquake struck the southeastern part of Turkey near the Syrian border. This natural catastrophe has left behind a trail of destruction and tragedy. Till now, more than 2,600 casualties have been recorded. In fact, World Health Organization suggest that the death toll may rise significantly. According to them, casualties could soar up to eight times higher. The rescuers are also facing multiple issues due to the freezing and snowy conditions in the city. 

Turkey Earthquake: A Massive Blow of 7.8 Magnitude 

The very first earthquake hit Turkey’s southern region, which was of around 7.8 magnitudes. It was one of the largest ever recorded in the city. The country was just dealing with this vast blow when another powerful tremor hit further north. 

Turkey is situated in one of the world’s most active earthquake zones. This area has seen many such catastrophic events in the past, especially in the years 1939 and 1999. 

After-Consequences of the Turkey Earthquake

Like any natural disaster, today’s earthquake has left many people without shelter. It adds more to the danger and urgency of the situation. It will not be wrong to call this an apocalypse, as the eye-witnesses of the event report. Besides physical damage to the infrastructure, the country’s residents are also facing substantial psychological trauma. There are even power outages and communication disruptions. 

What Leads to Earthquakes?

Earthquakes are considered one of the most destructive natural disasters depending upon the frequency of the magnitude. The primary reason behind the occurrence of this event is the movement of the tectonic plates. Now, what are these plates? Tectonic plates are large rocky slabs that make up the Earth’s crust. These plates float on the semi-liquid mantle below the crust.

The infrequent movement of these plates releases energy in the form of seismic waves, which cause the ground to shake. In this case, either the plate boundaries will move, or there will be random shaking within the plate itself. Both situations lead to earthquakes. Besides this natural reason, even some artificial activities could lead to earthquakes. Some common examples include underground nuclear testing, large dam construction, and injecting wastewater into the ground. 

Safety Precautions for Earthquake 

Earthquakes can hit any area suddenly. Hence, knowing all the safety precautions that can help you make quick decisions for yourself and your loved ones is crucial. 

Here are some of the things you can do: 

• If you are indoors, just take cover under a desk or a table. You must hold on in this position until the shaking stops. 
• If you are outside, move away from buildings and power lines. 
• Take a position away from windows, as broken glass could lead to injuries. Similarly, maintain a huge position from other things made of glass. 
• If you live in tall buildings, it is best to evacuate them as soon as possible. However, never use elevators to go down. Always take the stairs route. 
• Always stay prepared for aftershocks. It is a smaller earthquake that follows the major disaster and could be as dangerous as the previous one. 
• Also, do not forget to look for any gas leakages. If you smell gas, turn off the valves, open windows, and leave the building quickly. Meanwhile, never make the mistake of turning on the lights, starting any machinery, or using a phone or other electrical equipment.
